Oh Boy! Its Joy’s Personal Reading Collection

I LOVE TO READ. Trust me, I don’t have a lot of time on my hands to sit and read; I,m a busy mom of 2, a wife of 20 plus years and I have a full time career that takes me away from home each week. But, I LOVE TO READ. My somewhat “new” type of genre is historical fiction. I also like stories about children so I read a lot of Jodi Picoult’s novels. Here’s what I’m reading now:

  • They Cage the Animals at Night,  “its a terrific and emotional story about Jennings Michael Burch, a young boy who learned to survive in a cold, frightening world. His mother was too sick to care for him and left him in a series of orphanages and institutions” based on a true story.
  • Orphan Train  “So-called orphan trains ran regularly from the cities of the East Coast to the farmlands of the Midwest, carrying thousands of abandoned children whose fates would be determined by pure luck. Would they be adopted by a kind and loving family, or would they face a childhood and adolescence of hard labor and servitude?” Read to find out. a novel by Christina Baker Kline.

  1. WOW!!! “They Cage the Animals at Night” is quite a book. I finished reading it on Saturday. While this read was very sad, it also revealed the horrific truths of (then and now) a child’s life growing up in child care systems. After understanding what happens in orphanages & foster homes its no wonder why there are mentally challenged and deranged adults.

There are two things that left me thankful while reading; 1. Despite life’s challenges and how we are sometimes mistreated, there are still some very good people in this world.
Jennings was able to come across a few; 2. I’m happy that Jennings became a victor instead of a victim of his circumstances.

Jennings Michael Burch thanks for sharing your story.
